Understanding Your Learning Style

Published on 15th October 2024

In his 1983 book Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences, Howard Gardner proposed that there are multiple types of intelligence, challenging the traditional focus on the intelligence quotient (IQ) often emphasized in schools and universities.

These different intelligences influence how we learn, and each person tends to have a preferred learning style. For example, I learn best by doing. I can’t rely on reading a manual to figure out how to assemble something, but if someone demonstrates it and lets me try it simultaneously—bingo, it sticks.

In our anatomy and physiology course, our tutor, Jane, uses a method called Accelerated Learning, which integrates all learning styles. These include:

Visual (spatial): Preferring to learn through pictures, images, and spatial understanding.

Aural (auditory-musical): Preferring sound and music.

Verbal (linguistic): Preferring to use words, both in speech and writing.

Physical (kinesthetic): Preferring to use hands, body, and sense of touch.

Logical (mathematical): Preferring to use logic, reasoning, and systems.

Social (interpersonal): Preferring to learn in groups or through collaboration.

Solitary (intrapersonal): Preferring to work alone and use self-study.

For some, their learning styles and intelligences are clear. For example, David Beckham likely has strong physical and visual-spatial intelligence, while Oprah Winfrey excels in aural intelligence.

Many of us have strengths in multiple areas, and identifying these can not only help us learn more effectively but also guide our life paths. Jane’s teaching approach addresses all learning styles, and I encourage you to explore your own by taking this test.

Once you know your learning style, you can tailor your study methods to fit you best. For instance, I often teach myself by drawing things out—reading alone just doesn’t stick for me!

So, what’s your learning style? Happy studying!
