The heart has a special place in my er um heart!!
Why?
When I was 13 months old I had heart surgery to close a duct (opening) called the ductus arteriosis that should close shortly after birth.
While a baby is in the womb, it receives oxygen as well as nutrients through the placenta from its mother. This means that there is an opening between the aorta and pulmonary artery called the ductus arteriosus. which allows blood to bypass the baby’s lungs and go straight to it’s body. The ductus arteriosus should close on its own within a few days after birth. The subsequent health consequences can vary.
In my case, I wasn’t getting enough oxygenated blood to my limbs (which could have led to paralysis) or other cells of my body. I wasn’t getting enough oxygenated blood to my stomach cells to facilitate digestion and did not gain much weight. I was prone to lots of infections such as bronchitis and also had a mind form of rickets.
As soon as I had the surgery I picked up speed and haven’t stopped! Living a full and active life that I am grateful for every day.
Back then in the 1960's sewing up the patent (open) ductus required major surgery. I have 26 stitches down my back.
Now if not severe the duct can be stimulated to close through drugs or a plug is introduced into the heart via a vein in the leg with a catherter.
Amazing!!!
"These anatomy and physiology courses are fantastic. I wish all my university lectures 10 years ago had been available via e-learning. I would have remembered so much more"
