The ITEC Anatomy and Physiology Course Syllabus

ITEC was my exam board in 1989, I am shocked to say that was thirty three years ago. Back then, I was taught by the founder of ITEC, the International Therapy Examination Council, William Arnould Taylor who started it in 1947. It will be 75 years old this year and is recognised in over thirty countries. Wikipedia writes about it!

When I studied anatomy and physiology it was taught in a lecture theatre in London with hundreds of students over a weekend.

Now it is taught in therapy schools and online. I created our online anatomy and physiology course in 2009, when distance learning was becoming popular for my students of massage. 

The syllabus has developed and grown to take about one hundred hours of study and includes: 

  • Understand the organisation of the body
  • Describe the anatomical regions of the body
  • Describe the planes and quadrants of the body
  • Describe the directional terms of the body
  • Describe the chemical organisation of the body
  • Describe the structure, function and types of cell
  • Explain the structure, function, growth and repair of
  • the skin, hair and nails
  • Explain the structure and classification of bones
  • Explain the structure, function and growth of the
  • All the systems of the body
  • Explain the types of joints and their range of Movements
  • Explain the location and action of muscle groups within the muscular system
  • Explain the principles of muscle contraction
  • Explain the location of endocrine glands
  • Explain the function of the endocrine glands
  • Describe the hormones secreted from the endocrine glands and their target sites
  • Explain the process of gaseous exchange
  • Describe the stages of respiration
  • Composition of blood
  • Explain the location, structure and function of the
  • Heart
  • Type of blood vessels
  • Blood pressure
  • Describe the composition of lymph
  • Explain the location and function of the major lymphatic nodes and ducts and vessels
  • Immunity
  • Explain the processes of digestion and organs involved
  • Explain the production and content of urine
  • Explain the key stages of the human reproductive Cycle
  • Pathologies
